Walk the Line (Review of Joe's Date last night)

Well it may surprise some of you but I went on a date last night and I went (with very strong recommendations) to see Walk the Line in theaters. The Date turned out well but I had mixed feelings about the movie. Firstly I think Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon gave excellent performances as J. R. Cash, and June Carter. I was amazed to hear the songs of Johnny Cash sung so well by Joaquin Phoenix, but yes they were fully performed by him.(no dubbing was used for him) I also enjoyed seeing such a complex movie but I was not sure what the screenwriter wanted to tell me. This movie dealt with many uncomfortable subjects, like adultery, Drug abuse, and the effects of such things on your life and how this impacts the lives of those who are close to you. It was difficult for me to watch this happen to him and try to put it into perspective. It's tough for me to watch a movie that discusses the private life of a famous person in intimate detail without them being able to talk about it(If you didn't know Johnny Cash is dead and he is not able to comment). So it was a tough movie to sit through for me but the performances were an A+. I hope Joaquin gets an oscar for this performance, because it was incredible.
For a date this wasn't the best of movies, but Walk the Line ended on a happy note and Ice cream at the end allowed the date to be good (as my roomate says, any date that ends with Ice Cream is a good date).

Glad to hear the date went well! Joaquin Phoenix is great. Too bad the movie was rough. At least the icecream was good :)

Joe,
Thanks for the review. Your comments reaffirm my reasons (thus far) for not seeing Walk the Line. I have been a Johnny Cash fan for some years. I like his twangy sound and his man-in-black persona.

But I am not sure I want to know the painful realities of his life. Like Peter, I had a hard time with Ray....Painful to think of the drug use the adultery and the sordid life he lead on the road. I think the music and entertainment industry is full of these kinds of stories. My question is what is the purpose for telling them...to let us know that behind all the glamor and glitz, there is pain and darkness. A trip through the check out stand at any grocery store and past the tabloids is all the evidence I need that the life of the rich and famous is not to be envied.

Love You JOE B. MOM

Sounds like the movie was one of the subtle downers (the kind that are well made, but not uplifting). The opposite (the kind that are poorly made, but uplifting) is personified in Flight of the Navigator. Compliance! Possibly the only moment where I didn't like the beach boys.

PS - Who was the date?

Funny you should Mention Flight of the Navigator. I just saw a little bit of it.

The Date was Emily Harris.
