Down with the Oscars! Up with the Daisies!

I couldn't bring myself to watch the Academy Awards last night other than the 30 seconds I saw for a second. I didn't see many of the films nominated or that won. So I have a proposal, I want to identify some categories (some Oscars and some Others) and receive nominations. These are not limited to movies released this year. We can call the award a Daisy. Here are the categories I propose:

Best Dialogue

Best Story

Best Romantic Comedy

Best Action

Best Sci-Fi

Best Suspense

Best Western

Best Drama

Best Animated

Best Sports Movie

Best Comedy

Best Superhero/Comic Book Movie

Best Line from a Movie

Best Cinematography

Now for some guidance. Star Wars revenge of the Sith would not be a good entry for Best Dialogue, but could be considered for Best Story. Any film with Keanu Reeves will have a tough time winning a Best Dialogue award... poor delivery.

Finally, please post your nominations... multiple revisions are acceptable.

Well, I just watched Sense and Sensibility, and I want to nominate that for best dialogue. The scene where Elinor has to offer Edward the living on Brandon's estate!! What a fantastic film. I'll be back on for some more. We watched some of the Oscars, and I'm glad to see that Jennifer Hudson won (although we missed that part). She was pretty amazing in Dream Girls.

For Best SciFi I go with Empire Strikes Back or Gattaca.

Best Romantic Comedy may be Sabrina? Emma?

Best Suspense - To Catch a Thief

Best Western - Pale Rider but for shear fun I also give a nod to Magnificent Seven

Best Superhero - Superman (Christopher Reeve)

Best Sports Movie - Hoosiers? Rocky?

Best Story-I think the starwars saga is a dang good one.

Best Romantic Comedy-Return to Me

Best Action-The Fugitive. Recent--Casino Royale was pretty fun.

Best Sci-Fi-Empire Strikes Back

Best Suspense-Wait Until Dark. Hands down. The build up is amazing. And the part where he grabs her ankle!!

Best Animated-I really liked Corpse Bride. Flushed Away was pretty funny. But I'd maybe have to go with an old disney, like Robin Hood.

Best Sports Movie-Probably Rudy. Maybe one Rocky 1.

Best Comedy-i'm having a tough time with this one. probably philadelphia story

Best Comic Book Movie-Xmen 1

Best line-something from pirates.

Best Cinematography-Finding N. Or maybe Chariots of Fire?

You think Finding Nemo is the Best Cinematography?! Toy Story dunked on it!

Very good thought for Chariots of Fire. Great movie I wouldn't have thought of. I propose a Daisy for best musical score.

Best Story – A River Runs Through It
(I like how there is no clear antagonist or protagonist)

Best Romantic Comedy - As good as it Gets (Ann has converted me on this one)

Best Action – Top Gun (Gets my nod for being the most quoteable movie of all time)

Best Sci-Fi - Empire Strikes Back (I have to agree here)

Best Suspense – The Sixth Sense (The first time you saw it you were blown away…also combines great cinematography)

Best Animated – Robin Hood (Purely for the music within it)

Best Sports Movie – Hoosiers (The reason is because it could compete for story and music. Even Ann loved it when I had her sit down and watch it.)

Best Comedy – Dumb N Dumber (I can’t believe how often Ann catches me with quotes from that thing)

Best Comic Book Movie – Superman 1

Best Music Score - Superman or Star Wars I will choose one later.

Best line - I know what you're thinking punk, "Did he fire six shots, or only five?" Well the truth is I'm so caught up in all this excitement I've forgotten myself. But being that this is a .44 Magnum; the most powerful handgun in the world, and could blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, "Do I feel lucky?".... Well, Do ya, punk?!

Best Cinematography – I will get back to you on this one. But I will mention that I like the camera work in The Matrix. Not just the amazing fight scenes that too many movies have tried to copy and failed miserably but the angles and point of view it is shot from.

GREAT LINE! Dirty Harry has some great ones (eg - "Who is we?" "Me and Smith and Wesson")

Notice both of your scores are John Williams (the King of Scores) the Prince of Scores is Hans Zimmer. Most overrated score goes to (drumroll please) Lord of the Rings (extra points for Soprano Solos on single notes for long periods of time).

I'd also like to put in a word for Pat Doyle on scores--Henry V and Sense and Sense. Both amazing. And apparently he's really really funny.

Best movie quotes: "I...don't...bargin!"
probably any line from Three Amigos.

Comedy: A nod to Tommy Boy. For some reason that movie kills me every time.

Finding N. = finding neverland. great cinematography. one of my favorites in a while. Toy Story dunks on every single one of the Pixar films.

Good call, ice, on Sixth Sense. It did blow me away.

I want to get in on this...but I just haven't had the brain power to get through the entire list....I am impressed with all that you kids have proposed....I have a friend whose children play a game while they are doing the dishes - the object is to speak to one another using only movie lines. I know my kids could slam dunk her kids.

Best Drama: A Man for all Seasons

Best Comedy: Fletch

Best Romantic Comedy: You've got Mail

Best Sports: Hoosiers

Best Cinematograpy: Horse Whisperer

Best Superhero/Comic Book - I think Star Wars from the 70's or Indiana Jones fits here. Although if I had to go with a comic book, I think I would pick Spiderman with Toby what's his name. I really do NOT like Lois Lane in the Chris Reeve Superman and I am not at all fond of Kristen Dunst in Spidey, but I really like good ol' Toby.

Best Action: Clear and Present Danger or Patriot Games

Best Animated: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Best Suspense: I'm with Anna "Wait Until Dark", In all honesty, I cannot watch it anymore. One night Dad stayed up to watch it. He came upstairs about 3/4 or the way through it to say that it was very scary...I just cannot take the evil edge of Alan Arkin in that film. I am there and I FEEL it when I watch it. A "b" movie I saw when I was about 16 called, "I Know Who You are and I Saw What You Did" really did me and Burke in. We would scream while we were doing the dishes as we relived the suspense scenes.

SciFi: Which I don't like that well and am therefore pretty limited in my scope - Signs - love Joaquin Phoenix!

I have a favorite movie line from Man for All Seasons...I will get back with the exact quote. I LOVED Rob and Ann's....it really is perfection in its entirety. Ah, Clint....he did so much with so little.

Good calls on your films, mom. Love man for all seasons. Speaking of that kind of film, I've been making my way through Henry V and loving it. That St. Crispian's day speech is pretty phenomenal. Two thumbs up for Kenneth Branagh.
